Lauren Galbraith serves as the Executive Assistant to CASBO CEO Tatia Davenport. She helped shape the vision for the Executive Assistant Micro-Certificate Program, designed specifically for administrative professionals who support CBOs and other school business leaders. In this Q&A, Lauren shares why the course was created, what it addresses, and why professionalism, confidence, and clarity matter more than ever.

Q: Lauren, what inspired CASBO to create a micro-certificate program specifically for Executive Assistants?

A: As Executive Assistants in school business, we’re often navigating complex systems such as finance, governance, compliance, and HR, all while managing multiple personalities and priorities. And yet, many of us step into these roles without formal training. This course was created to bridge that gap. It gives Executive Assistants the practical knowledge and professional development they need to support their CBOs effectively and with confidence. It’s also about recognition. We wanted to say, “We see you. Your work matters. And here’s a program that invests in your growth.”

Q: What makes this program different from other administrative training?

A: This course is unique because it’s built by school business professionals for school business professionals. It’s not generic. It’s rooted in the real demands Executive Assistants face in our districts every day: preparing board meeting packets, managing confidential HR updates, or understanding when and how to escalate an issue. It also offers space for reflection, discussion, and connection with peers. That cohort model really helps participants realize: “I’m not alone. Others are juggling these same challenges.”

Q: How does this course support EAs in developing professionalism?

A: One of the things we emphasize in the program—and something I talk about often—is that Executive Assistants are the face of the district. We’re often the first voice on the phone, the first face people see in a meeting, and the point of contact for both internal departments and external partners. That visibility means our tone, our professionalism, and our attitude matter. They shape how the entire district is perceived. So the course spends meaningful time helping EAs strengthen their communication, set a positive tone, and lead with integrity. It’s about understanding that you don’t just represent yourself. You represent the mission, values, and credibility of your entire organization.

Q: What’s something you’ve seen change for participants after completing the program?

A: Confidence. That’s the biggest shift. Participants start to understand why certain things happen the way they do in school business, not just how to complete a task. They feel more comfortable asking questions, giving input, and anticipating their CBO’s needs. One participant told us, “Now when I’m sitting in meetings, I feel like I have a seat at the table.” That transformation—from task-taker to strategic partner—is what this program is all about.

Q: Can you share a favorite moment or takeaway from teaching or facilitating in the program?

A: I love when participants start sharing tips with each other, like how they block off time on their CBO’s calendar ahead of major deadlines or how they de-escalate tense calls from community members. Those real, boots-on-the-ground insights are so valuable. One moment that stuck with me was a participant who shared how she used the “4 A’s” framework we teach (Assess, Act, Assign, Acknowledge) to handle a really tough parent call. She said it helped her stay calm and think clearly. That’s exactly the kind of impact we hope for.

Q: What would you say to someone considering joining the next cohort?

A: If you’ve ever felt like you’re expected to know everything—but no one ever taught you the “why” behind it—this program is for you. It’s supportive, it’s practical, and it’s a chance to connect with others who get the work you do. You’ll finish the course not only with new skills and tools, but also with a renewed sense of pride in your role. And you’ll walk away with a certificate that recognizes you as a leader in your district.
