School business is not a single audience.

Anyone who works in or alongside K–12 education knows this intuitively. A payroll technician, a facilities manager, and a Chief Business Official may all work within the same district, but they experience the system in very different ways. They operate under different pressures, make decisions differently, and look for different kinds of information at different moments in their careers.

For CASBO, this reality has always shaped our programs, events, and professional learning. Over the past year, we’ve taken a more intentional step forward by formalizing that understanding into two connected initiatives: a persona framework and a marketing content map.

Why Personas Matter in School Business

Personas are not marketing gimmicks. They are shared profiles that represent real groups of professionals, grounded in roles, responsibilities, career stages, and decision environments.

In school business, personas are especially important because the work is highly regulated, role-specific, time-constrained, and deeply interconnected across departments. Generic messaging simply doesn’t work.

Through staff analysis, member input, and board-level discussion, CASBO aligned around core personas:

  • The Unaware Newcomer – Early-career professionals who need orientation and confidence-building.
  • The Rising Specialist – Mid-career professionals seeking structured learning and advancement.
  • The Executive CBO – Senior leaders who value concise, strategic insight and peer-level dialogue.

These personas help us answer a critical question before we design or promote anything: Who is this for, and what do they need right now?

From Personas to a Content Map

Once we established a shared understanding of who we are speaking to, the next step was clarity around how and where we engage them. CASBO’s marketing content map organizes our communications around editorial themes rather than just formats.

Our core content themes include Begin & Explore, Build & Grow, Lead & Stay Ahead, Connect & Share, Plan & Attend, and Impact & Advocate. Each piece of CASBO content—past and future—can be aligned to these themes and mapped to specific personas.

Why This Matters for Our Partners

For organizations serving the school business community, this framework provides clarity. School business professionals are busy and selective. They respond best to messaging that is relevant to their role, respectful of their time, and clear about value.

By aligning your go-to-market planning with CASBO’s personas and content map, you can target the right audience, choose the right moment, and select the right tone and format.

Resources to Support Your Planning

We encourage partners, sponsors, and associate members to explore CASBO resources that reflect this persona-driven approach:

  • CASBO Con Audience Brochure
  • School Business University (SBU): CASBO’s on-demand and instructor-led coursework aligned to the topics school business professionals care about most. Reviewing SBU courses is a helpful way to understand current member priorities and learning needs.

Looking Ahead

CASBO’s persona and content map work is an ongoing effort designed to strengthen how we serve school business professionals across California. For our partners, it provides a shared framework for planning campaigns that feel relevant, timely, and supportive.

The school business profession is complex. Thoughtful go-to-market strategy acknowledges that complexity and responds with clarity, relevance, and respect. We look forward to continuing this work together.
