The School Business Finance Certificate Program is designed to help current and aspiring school business professionals strengthen their understanding of the financial systems, operational responsibilities, and leadership practices that support California’s local educational agencies. Through a flexible, self-paced online learning experience, participants will build practical knowledge across the core areas of school business finance while developing the confidence and strategic perspective needed to grow as effective fiscal leaders.

This comprehensive certificate program explores the interconnected areas of budgeting, accounting, auditing, personnel management, technology systems, procurement, school law, leadership, project management, and financial communication. Participants will gain a broader understanding of how financial decisions impact district operations, compliance, organizational effectiveness, and ultimately student success.

Ideal for directors of finance, directors of accounting, fiscal office managers and analysts, early-career CBOs, bookkeepers, accountants new to school business, department directors, assistant superintendents, administrators, legislative staff, and school board members, this program provides both foundational and leadership-focused learning that can be applied immediately in the workplace.

Delivered through CASBO’s self-paced SBU platform, the program combines online learning modules, peer discussion boards, reflection activities, and knowledge checks to create an engaging and flexible professional development experience. Participants will learn from experienced school business leaders and practitioners representing districts, county offices, and educational agencies across California.

The School Business Finance Certificate Program also serves as a valuable pre-step pathway for professionals considering future participation in CASBO’s CBO Business Executives Leadership (BEL) program and aspiring to future CBO leadership and certification roles.

Registration Policies

Associate Member Conference Attendance Policy

Purpose To ensure a fair and consistent experience for all participants at CASBO conferences and to maintain the value of sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for associate members.

Policy Statement Associate Members who are not exhibiting or sponsoring at a CASBO conference are not permitted to attend the event as regular attendees.

Details

  • Conference attendance for Associate Members is considered a benefit tied to active participation as an exhibitor or sponsor.
  • Only Associate Member firms with a confirmed exhibit booth or paid sponsorship are eligible to register representatives for conference access.
  • Associate Members without an exhibit or sponsorship may not:
    • Purchase or obtain standard attendee registrations
    • Access sessions, meals, networking events, or the exhibit hall
    • Attend on behalf of or in partnership with another exhibiting or sponsoring organization
  • This policy ensures equitable opportunities for participating partners and protects the value of conference engagement offerings.

Exceptions Any exceptions to this policy must be reviewed and approved in advance by CASBO leadership.

Enforcement CASBO reserves the right to:

  • Deny registration requests that do not meet the eligibility requirements
  • Remove individuals from the event who attend in violation of this policy
  • Revoke or limit membership privileges for repeated violations
