School Closures & SB 117 Funds

On April 1, 2020, Governor Newsom held a press conference to reaffirm State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond’s message that due to current safety concerns, school districts are encouraged to strengthen their distance learning programs as it appears that students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the year. To read the SPI Thurmond’s message, click here.

Information on the closure of schools in response to COVID-19, Form J-13A, the reporting of attendance for apportionment, and instructional time are available here. Should you have any additional questions of feedback, please submit at COVID19@cde.ca.gov.

Yesterday, SPI Thurmond announced the $100 million appropriated in SB 117, one of the two COVID-19 emergency legislation, will be distributed to local educational agencies based on its 2019-20 average daily attendance (ADA) funded by CDE in February 2020. Eligible LEAs had to be operational on March 4, 2020 and will receive $17.37 per ADA, with a minimum funding allocation of $250 per school site.

The State Controller’s Office will issue payments to each county treasurer’s office within 3-4 business days. For additional information, click here.
