Schools Excess Liability Fund

SELF is a not-for-profit, joint powers authority, formed in 1986 during the insurance crisis that left California public schools unable to purchase or afford commercial general liability coverage. SELF provides excess liability coverage for more than 550 school districts, charter schools, county offices and other educational entities statewide.

Most of our members obtain their first $5M in liability coverage from a primary JPA and purchase the next $50M in limits from SELF. We offer reliable coverage, stable rates and the added benefit of being run by schools, for schools with a staff dedicated solely to SELF.
