Recommended Training Options for the School Business Payroll Professional (SBPP) Certification

There are three levels of SBPP Certification:

SBPP I

Training: 60 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) earned at an accredited university or community college or through an approved professional development provider*

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in an education-related position OR two years of experience in a management or supervisory position

Education: High school diploma/GED

SBPP II

Training: 60 hours of CEUs earned at an accredited university or community college or through an approved professional development provider

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in an education-related management or supervisory position OR two years of experience in a management or supervisory position

Education: A minimum of two years of post-high school education

SBPP III

Training: 60 hours of CEUs earned at an accredited university or community college or through an approved professional development provider

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in an education-related management or supervisory position OR two years of experience in a management or supervisory position

Education: A bachelor’s or graduate degree from an accredited university

The training requirements for all three levels are the same. You can satisfy them by completing these classes (60 CEUs):

Payroll Essentials

Satisfies a core requirement for the SBPP Certification. Training is specific to the candidates’ COE or District. Upload a letter of completion, signed by supervisor, in online application.

Complete any combination of workshops listed below to satisfy remaining skill hours (35 CEUs).

    • CalSTRS & CalPERS: Common Issues and Employer Liability (6.5 CEUs)
    • CalSTRS & CalPERS: Retirement Concepts
    • Collective Bargaining Basics (3.5 CEUs)
    • Evaluation and Performance Management (6.5 CEUs)
    • Leaves of Absence (3.5 CEUs)
    • Legal Requirements for HR/Payroll Records (3.5 CEUs)
    • Payroll Compliance & Year-End Reporting (6.5 CEUs)
    • Payroll Concepts (6.5 CEUs)
    • Principles of School Law (3.5 CEUs)
    • SACS (Basic) (6.5 CEUs)
    • SACS (Advanced) (6.5 CEUs)

*CEUs earned at the university or community college level are valid indefinitely; CEUs earned through an approved professional development provider are valid for four years.
