I had a wonderful experience earning the CBO Certification. The materials have been invaluable in my career and broadened my knowledge of school business. It was a great confidence builder. Networking is a much needed support system for a CBO. – Mary Downey; Deputy Superintendent Business Services; Sonoma COE

Recommended Training Options for Chief Business Official (CBO) Certification

CBO

Training: 440 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) earned at an accredited university or community college or through an approved professional development provider

CBOE

Training: 440 hours of CEUs earned at an accredited university or community college or through an approved professional development provider
Add the “E” for Experience and Education: A minimum of five years of current, consecutive experience as a Chief Business Official AND a bachelor’s or graduate degree from an accredited university. (Adding the “E” is an opportunity for us to recognize our veteran CBOs for their expertise.)

The training requirements are the same for both levels; however, you can satisfy them by following different paths.

By completing the CASBO BEL Program (440 CEUs)*

By completing a full CBO training program* offered by an approved professional development provider (440 CEUs):

  • FCMAT CBO Mentor Program
  • USC Rossier School of Education: Certificate in School Business Management Program
  • Wilkes University Master’s Program in School Business Leadership

Each of the above satisfies most Core, plus all Skill, Practicum and Elective training requirements.

If not completing a full CBO training program, here is an example of how many applicants have earned their CEUs by following their own path:

  • Core (90 CEUs):
    • University or community college courses** in (1) Accounting, (2) Human Resources and Management, and (3) Information and Technology Systems.
  • Skill (100 CEUs)
    • Event: ACSA School Business Academy
  • Electives (210 CEUs)
    • CASBO Workshops: Choose any from the CASBO Professional Development Course Catalog to satisfy Elective requirements.
    • Professional development from CASBO or an outside organization that satisfy any Core or Skill requirement, but that have not been used previously to satisfy another requirement.
  • Practicum (40 CEUs)
    • The Practicum can be completed through an accredited university (four-unit course). It can also be completed through on-the-job CBO experience or with a 40-hour pre-approved project (see Practicum Substitution Form).
