CBO Mentor Training Program (FCMAT)

About the CBO Mentor Training Program

The CBO Mentor Training Program is an interagency collaboration between the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT); CASBO; School Services of California, Inc.; and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association and its Business and Administration Steering Committee. It is designed to produce qualified California school district CBOs with the purpose of helping California school districts fill CBO vacancies.

The year-long program provides classroom training that takes place in 10 two-day sessions (held on Friday evenings and Saturdays). Instructors are qualified and experienced CBOs or recognized experts in their field. FCMAT also works with CASBO to link the program to CASBO's CBO Certification Program so that successful participants may receive CBO certification after evaluation and approval by their mentors and by CASBO's CBO Certification Program evaluator.

The program is unique due to its four major components:

  • The selection process is competitive — participants must be nominated for the program.
  • Participants are teamed with their own mentor who is a successful CBO with a proven track record of success.
  • The curriculum is rigorous with significant hands-on training.
  • FCMAT funds all costs of the program, except for participants' travel and lodging expenses.

Becoming a Participant or Mentor

Many participants come from the business support area, but FCMAT specifically recruits and selects candidates with leadership experience in the disciplines of facilities, food service, technology and instruction. “Each year, the selection process becomes more competitive, with many qualified applicants vying for a limited number of slots,” says former FCMAT CEO Joel Montero. The screening process is based upon selection of 30 candidates who have the attributes to become a successful CBO. All candidates must be nominated into the program, with nominators identifying why they believe their candidate will make a successful CBO.

Mentors typically have 10 or more years of experience as a CBO. FCMAT strives to match participants with mentors in their geographic area.

How to Apply

If you are interested in becoming a participant or mentor, applications are usually due in early to mid-December of each year, with selections made in January, followed by notifications in February. Check this website for links to program documents when they become available.
