On Oct. 4, 2021, the Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents (ALAS) announced 18 outstanding leaders as recipients of their annual awards for education advocacy and leadership.

CASBO congratulates Don Austin, Ed.D., superintendent of CASBO Organizational Subscriber Palo Alto Unified School District, on being named a recipient of the ALAS Champions of Equity Award.

Dr. Austin is in his fourth year with Palo Alto Unified, which he chose to serve after extensive research and years of following the schools and community, according to biographical information posted on the district’s website.

Dr. Austin believes strongly in the importance of organizational clarity, commitment to the fundamentals of school business, fiscal responsibility, innovation through pilots, access and equity, replicating best practices, honest and direct communication, and meticulous attention to detail.

Striving to hire, develop and retain the best talent in every position to best support all students, he takes joy in seeing the magic moments that make school an experience worth remembering. As a life-long educator and learner, Dr. Austin says he is proud to serve Palo Alto Unified and pledges his best effort each day.

Dr. Austin completed his undergraduate work at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas; and earned his MA and Ed.D. at Azusa Pacific University, in Azusa, California. He was honored with his award on Oct. 9, 2021, in Washington, D.C., at the 18th Annual National Gala and Awards Dinner held during ALAS’ 18th Annual National Education Summit.
