Learning to See Beyond the Ledger

At first, finance felt transactional. Budgets in, budgets out. But with every monthly closing and every audit prep session, I started noticing patterns, and opportunities. The budget wasn’t just about balancing, it was about prioritizing what mattered.

I began asking different questions:

  • How does this purchase support the district’s mission?
  • What does this funding delay mean for the student experience?
  • Why aren’t department leads at the table when we build the spending plan?

Finance became less about accuracy and more about alignment between money and goals, people and process, leadership and trust.

Finding My Voice Through Budget Conversations

As I gained experience, I moved into a budget analyst role and began working closer with site administrators. I was no longer behind the curtain, I was helping others understand the budget, guiding their decisions, and slowly building influence.

It wasn’t always easy.

I had to learn how to:

  • Communicate complex financial data to non-financial leaders
  • Navigate emotionally charged discussions during tight budget years
  • Lead cross-departmental teams on new initiatives with limited resources

But with every LCAP meeting, board presentation, or facilities update, I got stronger.

What Changed Everything

The turning point came when I participated in a certificate program focused on school business finance leadership.

For the first time, I wasn’t just learning how to do the work. I was learning why it mattered and how to lead it.

I gained tools that helped me:

  • See the whole system from HR to operations to curriculum
  • Make connections between budgets and student outcomes
  • Guide teams, not just projects
  • Build trust in a role that often means saying “no” with empathy

I realized: finance was the foundation, but leadership was the goal.

From Finance Professional to Strategic Leader

Today, as a CBO, I rely on everything I learned in those early roles. But more than that, I use the mindset I developed:

  • Rooted in service
  • Grounded in equity
  • Focused on strategic alignment

I’m not just here to “run the numbers.” I’m here to help our district thrive fiscally, operationally, and most importantly, educationally.

See Your Finance Role Differently

If you’re in a finance role today and wondering what’s next, I encourage you to see yourself differently.

You’re not just a technician. You’re a translator. A problem-solver. A potential leader.

School business needs more professionals who understand both the books and the big picture. And the CBO seat needs people who know what it’s like to build trust, lead with data, and advocate for what’s right.

Finance isn’t a detour! It’s a direct pathway to impactful leadership.
