Recently, we informed you about a unique opportunity to become the recognized transportation expert in your local education agency (LEA) by attending some unique training: Our new CASBO Transportation Leadership Academy (TLA). If you've given it some thought and would like to participate, there's no time to waste ... the deadline to apply for our next TLA session expires this Friday, July 12!

This intensive program (held one weekend each month for 10 months) is designed for school business professionals aspiring to or already working in a transportation management or leadership role who are interested in earning our new CASBO Director of Transportation Certification* (currently in development). Supervisors, directors and managers are encouraged to attend.

The TLA offers a collegial and cooperative atmosphere intended to provide the education and networking you need to gain an understanding of the dedication, care and compassion necessary for leadership, as well as the tools necessary to thrive beyond the academic environment. You'll learn about and attain proficiency in technical management topics, including:

  • School bus laws and regulations governing operations, instructor certifications, driver training and vehicle maintenance;
  • Budget and finance issues, including the Standardized Account Code Structure financial reporting system, operational and capital budgeting, purchasing, inventory, payables and payroll;
  • Personnel issues relative to the California Education Code, employment best practices, employee evaluations and leaves, collective bargaining, and conducting investigations;
  • Legal issues relative to ethics, sexual harassment training, child abuse reporting, citizen complaints, district policies, board relations, the Brown Act, student discipline and contracting for service;
  • School bus operations, best practices and comparative metrics relative to shop operations and vehicle maintenance, facility operations, dispatch and routing, appropriate staffing, driver training and record keeping; and
  • General management topics such as business writing and presentation skills, as well as enhanced management and situational leadership skills that will enhance your success and that of your transportation department.

Instruction takes place one weekend per month, with classes on Friday evenings from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program registration fee is $2,500 and includes attendance and certificate of completion; materials and resources; and Friday dinner and Saturday continental breakfast and boxed lunch.

We already have a sold-out Southern California session in progress; it began on March 1, and runs through December 14, 2019. Now, we have a Northern California session scheduled at the Natomas Unified School District, beginning August 23, 2019!

If you want to participate in our Northern California TLA, please complete and submit your no-cost application, along with a cover letter, resume and letter of recommendation, no later than July 12, 2019. We’ll notify you by July 26 if your application is approved and let you know when registration opens. Don't wait! There are less than 10 seats left open for this session!

*To qualify for the CASBO Director of Transportation Certification, you must show proof of completion of all TLA requirements, including attendance and homework. Once you earn your TLA certificate of completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for CASBO certification.
